Heavy Rains Claim Lives and Cause Destruction in DR Congo
Heavy rains in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have claimed at least 15 lives and caused widespread destruction in the city of Bukavu.
The downpour triggered landslides, building collapses, and the flooding of the Kawa River, affecting different neighborhoods of the two-million-resident city. According to a provincial hospital staff member, 15 bodies were received from various parts of the city.
However, the town hall spokesperson, Joseph Mugisho Zihalirwa, reported 19 deaths and five injuries in the Kadutu district alone, with 11 members of a single family being swept away by the river.
The rains also triggered a wall collapse in a church during prayer in the Ibanda district, killing five worshippers. In addition, three individuals were reported to have been swept away by the waters.
Tragic Aftermath and Ongoing Rescue Efforts
An estimated 20 deaths were reported in the territory of Mwenga due to the rains, according to the territory’s administrator, Mao Ishikitilo. Residents, like Yvonne Mukombi, are appealing for digging tools to continue searching for those trapped under rubble.
The torrential rains have also inflicted infrastructural damage, including a ruptured water pipe, leaving a significant portion of the city without water. Furthermore, in a separate incident in Kananga, central Congo, landslides claimed at least 22 lives and destroyed over 15 houses.
The Vulnerability of Bukavu
This calamity underscores a pattern of deadly landslides and fires in Bukavu, a city marked by steep slopes and uncontrolled urbanization. The vulnerability of the region to natural disasters emphasizes the necessity for improved risk management and urban planning.
The city’s waterways, often clogged by waste, are frequently overwhelmed by heavy rainfall, leading to devastating floods and landslides. The United Nations climate experts have pointed to poor urban planning and weak infrastructure as factors increasing communities’ vulnerability to extreme weather events.
A Call to Action
The recent catastrophes in Bukavu and the surrounding regions serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for international cooperation and support to address climate change and disaster preparedness in the Democratic Republic of Congo and across Africa.
These events underscore the need for enhanced urban planning, infrastructure development, and waste management to mitigate the dire effects of natural disasters. The global community must rally together to protect vulnerable populations from the devastating impacts of climate change.
