An NGO defending press freedom in DR Congo on Wednesday denounced hundreds of attacks on journalists, including five deaths, which occurred over the past five years.
The rights group Journaliste en Danger (JED) said that there had been 523 attacks of various types on reporters over the period and that 160 had been arrested.
Five journalists were also killed during the period, the rights group said.
JED blamed President Felix Tshisekedi — who came to power after an election in 2018 — for failing to uphold pledges to protect journalists.
« No major political, judicial or security measures have been taken to make the work of journalists safer, » the rights group said.

Tshisekedi is running for a second five-year term in a presidential poll scheduled for December 20.
Three journalists are currently in jail in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to JED.
They include Stanis Bujakera, a prominent reporter jailed in September on charges of spreading false rumours.
