Democratic Republic of Congo Counts Votes Amidst Election Dysfunction
The ongoing vote counting process across the city of Baraka and the broader Fizi electoral district in Sud-Kivu is a critical juncture in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s political landscape. The election, marked by incumbent President Felix Tshisekedi’s bid for a second term, unfolds against a backdrop of escalating violence and humanitarian crisis, which has caused almost 7 million people to be internally displaced.
The Struggle of a Nation
The country, despite its wealth of natural resources, grapples with dire conditions. Corruption, conflict, and insecurity have hampered the ability to meet the needs of its people. A Gallup survey reveals that millions are struggling to afford basic necessities while widespread health issues prevail. More than half of the populace feels unsafe walking alone in their communities at night.
Election Amidst Dysfunctions
Reports of numerous dysfunctions marred the first day of voting. Logistical mess, accessibility issues, and instances of violence and tension emerged. Several candidates are calling for a reorganization of the vote due to these challenges. Nonetheless, the determination of the voters to fulfill their civic duty shines through, with some waiting late into the night to cast their votes. Around 70% of the electoral centers have begun counting the results.
Claims of Fraud and Delays
The presidential elections have seen delays, logistical problems, and claims of fraud. Some opposition candidates demand fresh elections due to mismanagement and faulty equipment. Voting extended into a second day in some parts of the country, and there were reports of power cuts and dysfunctional electronic kits at polling stations. The UN Security Council has voted for the gradual withdrawal of the UN peacekeeping force from DR Congo, amid concerns about its effectiveness. As the vote counting continues, the citizens of Congo, over 40 million of which are eligible voters, wait with bated breath.
