The footballers who escaped one of the most dangerous countries on Earth

“We see potential spies and enemies everywhere,” says David. “It can be at border control or it can be in a cafe. The other day, a guy was looking at me strangely, so I left without finishing my breakfast, and jumped in a taxi — asking the driver to take me to the wrong address.”

David is an Eritrean footballer, a refugee who thinks government agents are still watching him even though he fled the country a long time ago and is now thousands of miles away. He felt like his future was being stolen from him yet insists he was one of the lucky ones.

Though he recognises the importance of telling at least part of his story, he is thin on detail at times because the conversation makes him feel nervous. When he speaks to The Athletic, he talks quietly. He does not want anyone to hear what he is saying.

Coming up: Equatorial Guinea vs Guinea

The Guinea derby, as no one calls it, is coming up shortly. The game kicks off at 5pm GMT (in a little more than half an hour), which equates to 12pm/midday ET and 9am PT in the United States.

I’m delighted to say that our man on the ground, the inimitable Jay Harris, will be bringing you updates live from Ebimpe as Naby Keita and Co take on AFCON top scorer Emilio Nsue’s men.

First, ten-man Angola beat ten-man Namibia 3-0 in the first round of 16 game. Angola goalkeeper Neblu was sent off for handling outside his box, before a Gelson Dala double bookended Lubeni Pombili Haukongo’s red card after a harsh second yellow for tripping Mabululu in a chaotic five minutes.

Mabululu scored late to put the gloss on the win.

In the later kick-off, Nigeria beat Cameroon 2-0 to end a miserable tournament for the Indomitable Lions. Cameroon had 60% possession but couldn’t even register a shot on target as Ademola Lookman scored twice, the second in the 90th minute, to knock their opponents out.

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was an unused substitute again.

Morocco head coach Walid Regragui’s two-match suspension has been overturned after a successful appeal.

Regragui is now available to return the touchline for Morocco’s last-16 tie against South Africa on January 30, having missed out on his side’s final Group E fixture — a 1-0 win over Zambia.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) handed Regragui a four-match ban, two of which were suspended, following a clash with former Newcastle United defender Chancel Mbemba after the full-time whistle in Morocco’s 1-1 draw against DR Congo on January 21.

In 2017, Cameroon came out on top, 2-1 against Egypt. Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Zambia won the previous three tournaments, following Egypt’s three in a row from 2006 to 2010.

…is the Stade Laurent Pokou, AKA the Stade de San Pedro, in San Pedro, Ivory Coast.

It’s named after the late, great striker Laurent Pokou, who scored 21 goals in his 30 caps for Ivory Coast.

He scored six goals at the 1968 AFCON and eight at the 1970 AFCON – both tournament-leading totals – and the ball for this year’s competition is named after him too.

The stadium houses 20,000 people and has hosted six group-stage matches so far.

What time does the match kick off?

Good question. It starts at 8pm local time and GMT in the UK, 3pm ET and 12pm/midday PT in the US.

Hello and welcome to today’s AFCON match!
