Hundreds of fans flock to city centre sneaker store to meet Afrobeat superstar Burna Boy

Hundreds of excited fans flocked to Leicester city centre to meet Afrobeat superstar Burna Boy yesterday. The Grammy Award winner announced a free meet and greet at popular sneaker store, Off Season on Silver street, with less than a day’s notice to promote his new chart topping album I Told Them.

Burna Boy took to both X, formerly known as Twitter, and Instagram on Tuesday, September 5, to announce to his followers that he would be visiting the city on the following day. But the short notice did not stop his fans from making the date.

His stop in Leicester was among several others he has done across the country to promote I Told Them. Fans waited hours for the opportunity to purchase merchandise and have a photograph taken with the singer.

Local food spot, The Grill Shack were also on hand, giving out free food and drinks to Burna’s supporters, who queued in their numbers to meet him. Leicestershire Live went along to the meet and greet, prior to Burna Boy’s arrival, and spoke to some of his eager fans.

Ruqqayah Beardon, 23, said that Burna Boy is her most listened to artist on Spotify. She said: “I was working in the building opposite, and I saw a large crowd and Googled it, saw that my favourite artist is coming to do a meet and greet.

« My manager literally let me leave early to come and see him. I can’t believe that someone as big as him is coming, I did not expect it at all.”

Mega fan Cassandra Shogbanmu, 20, said: « I’m from London but I came to Leicester for university. I’m so excited to meet him in person, because I’ve seen him on stage and he is amazing, but it’s really nice to be able to see him face to face and talk to him – it’s just magical.”

Ethan Sawu, 16, said: “My favourite Burna Boy track is On the Low. I’m so excited to meet him in person and see what he’s like – it’s going to be interesting meeting him for the first time.”

Anisha Patel, 30, added: “It feels great, I’m a big fan and I literally wanted to cry when I heard he was coming. I’m a fashion designer, so if he takes my card and lets me make him a jacket, I will cry.

“I really like his fashion sense and I think that’s one of the most fascinating things about him. It’s really good that he’s coming to Leicester, because it’s good promotion for the city, and by him coming here, it shows that we are doing something right.”

22-year-old Helen Mchatta added: “I wanna see his vibe. I’ve never been to a concert so it’s exciting to be up close and personal with him. »
