Niger state government has banned open scavenging in the 25 local government areas of the state.
The General Manager, Niger State Environmental Protection Agency (NISEPA), Dr Abubakar Mohammed announced this during a meeting with members of the state chapter of Scrap Metal Dealers Association of Nigeria in Minna.
Dr Mohammed warned that anyone found still engaging in the act will be prosecuted.
He said plans were underway to introduce the use of bin bags in household, where waste will be deposited in and disposed by NISEPA at an affordable price.
Commending the members of Niger state chapter of the Scrap Metal Dealers Association of Nigeria for unanimously agreeing to support the initiative, Dr Mohammed further solicited their support in ensuring a successful execution.
The Chairman, Scrap Metal Dealers Association of Nigeria, Niger state chapter, Abba Gambo said prosecution will not be necessary as members of the association will comply with the directive.
Gambo added that members of the Association would support any initiative targeted at developing Niger state and Nigeria at large.
